First of all, it's exactly the same as the comic book. EXACTLY the same. It's black and white (With the exception of some red, some blue and some yellow) like the comic book, there's a hell of a lot of narration like the comic book, and the lines are exactly the same as in the comic book. Seriously, there was no script - just the comic book. Whilst the comic book seemed to be entertaining (I only read part of one) the film was honestly a slight letdown. I checked out Wikipedia, IMDB and IGN reviews before watching this and it seemed to be a fantastic film. Clearly there were a few bad reviews, but that's expected. Can't please 'em all. The comic book worked. The film, to me at least, didn't.
The black and white didn't bother me. I understood it was supposed to be comic book-like and accepted that. There were then shots of a comic book style (Zooming in on their face etc) which was mildly tolerable. The entire thing seemed to include more narration than dialogue. Not necessarily a bad thing. Mickey Rourke's acting is great but his voice pisses me off (People who have seen 'The Wrestler' should definitely understand what I mean) Then there were the stunts and effects - they were, very honestly, laughable. To me they were very unrealistic. I know, superheroes themselves aren't realistic, what with the flying, stretching, super strength, speed, invisibility, turning green when you get angry etc. but looking at these effects for the first time, I'm sure people could tell where I'm coming from. The sequence at the beginning with the diving down the staircase and landing on the bin bags is a prime example. Kicking through the car windows was cool though.
The first story (The one with Marv, I think his name is) ragged on for far too long and was senseless. A prostitute dies, and he ends up getting attacked by other prostitutes, captured by a cannibal and finally getting electrocuted. I honestly didn't get it at all. I actually wanted the cannibal to tear his face off. Also, how many bullets does it take to kill this guy? Minor characters - 1 bullet per death. Him - 2,000 and still no death.
Bruce Willis' character (Hartigan?) seemed to completely recover from his angina/heart attacks in certain areas, and in the end just shoots himself. I think dying of a heart attack would've been much more realistic as ell as poetic and cool.
But this dislike isn't one of those deep, physical hatreds I have, like for Transformers 2 or Hollyoaks. I could watch some of it with slight interest. The make-up was great as was some of the more realistic effects. I found myself wanting the main characters to get hurt (Which is normal with me. That's just how I want the story to go. I cried when L died in 'Death note') and I liked the use of colourless editing, except for certain colours. It made the blood look much more graphic and awesome.
So, that's my views on this film. I think I'm going to keep this Blogger page thing for those extra-long tweets I may make. I'm going to rate this film 4 to 5/10. Based on my critical history, that's actually not bad at all. I guess I have to be into the comic books and everything to fully appreciate the film.
as a final note I'd like to add I don't intend on insulting anyone who likes this film. When I ripped TF2 apart some people seemed heavily offended..
I have KFC now :D
